SBA Names Bennett Motors of Great Falls 2012 Montana Family-Owned Small Business
Friday, 11 May 2012 05:47

HELENA, MT- Bennett Motors has been named SBA’s 2012 Montana Family-Owned Small Business.  Bennett Motors will be honored at an awards ceremony in Gallatin Gateway on June 7, 2012, along with a cast of other outstanding award winners.

For nearly 100 years, Bennett Motors has been a part of the Great Falls Community.  This progressive company and its leadership have always been driven by continuous improvement.

Bennett Motors withstood the most recent economic uncertainty in the automotive industry and came back strong.  When General Motors (GM) discontinued the Pontiac franchise in 2009, the Bennett Motors team was devastated as it was in the midst of celebrating 70 years of Pontiac sales and service.  Then, like all GM dealers, Bennett was also faced with the threat of losing their GMC truck and Buick franchises, as GM was eliminating dealerships to address bankruptcy stipulations.  Despite the negative impacts, Bennett Motors saw a 69% increase in sales in 2010 and today employs 74.

Governor Schweitzer: Montana Leads the U.S. in Pulse Crop Production
Friday, 11 May 2012 05:35

(HELENA) – Governor Brian Schweitzer announced that Montana farmers led the nation in pulse crop acreage in 2011 and will continue to do so in 2012, based on the current U.S. Department of Agriculture Prospective Plantings Report. Pulse crops -- which derive their name from a Latin word meaning “thick,” like many of the soups made from these grains -- include peas, lentils, and chickpeas.

“This kind of agriculture value-adding investment is a win-win for Montana,” said Governor Schweitzer. “Producers benefit in a number of ways: higher-value crops, more diversified farms, decreased fertilizer costs, and disruption of crop pest cycles. And entering these new markets helps Montana’s economy continue to grow.” Montana has more than $490 million cash in the bank today.

Montana farmers boosted their acreages of pulse crops significantly in the last decade to nearly half a million acres. The increase has been driven primarily by economics. In addition to favorable prices for pulses and low nitrogen fertilizer requirements, adding these legumes into a crop rotation is beneficial to wheat and barley harvested the following year.

MSU Announces Online Degree Completion Program

BOZEMAN - Montana State University has launched a new online bachelor's degree completion program for students who have at least two years of college credits but do not yet have a four-year degree.

The program, which offers a bachelor's degree in liberal studies, is designed for graduates of community colleges, tribal colleges, colleges of technology and other two-year programs. It is also appropriate for military personnel and veterans; people who need a bachelor's degree to advance on the job; and anyone interested in the broad-based education of a liberal studies degree. The program is offered fully online.

More than one-third of Montanans have an associate's degree or some college credits but not a bachelor's degree, said Peg Wherry, director of Montana State Online. She added that the new program will be particularly relevant to that group, and that development of the undergraduate degree completion program fits with some of the top initiatives MSU President Waded Cruzado set forth when she came to the university.

How to Help Customers Keep Their Sanity Without Losing Yours
Monday, 07 May 2012 05:07

(Chris Syme) The opening night of the 2012 Social Media Success Summit featured a power-packed session by Jeremiah Owyang and his research on how advanced companies use social media. One of the questions after his presentation asked how to handle the escalation process in social media that can turn frustrated customers into an angry mob.

Owyang assured listeners that there are four levels of customer intervention, and if handled properly, they can create solutions without dedicating social media resources to customer service.

1. Level One: Well-designed FAQ sections on websites and other media.  If Frequently Asked Question sections are up front, visible, and easily navigated, customers can often get answers to many problems without having to pick up the phone, send an angry email, or head to Twitter to complain.

Oil.. Pitfalls & Preparations Workshop May 14-15
Tuesday, 08 May 2012 05:44

On Monday & Tuesday, May 14th & 15th, the Yogo Inn in Lewistown will be presenting a timely event, entitled “OIL… Pitfalls & Preparations from the Veterans”, of interest to community leaders and other parties from every Montana community west of Sidney, and east of the Rockies.  While there probably won’t be any better answers from this event to the BIG questions on virtually everyone’s mind in Montana (Is the oil business coming?…If so, how soon?...If so, how big?) than they’ve gotten from a myriad other sources to-date, there’ll be answers to more tangible and “down-to-earth” questions like “What’s really going on in Sidney?” (not necessarily what’s in the media, or the rumor mills), “What would you have done differently given the chance?”, and “How does the geology in my area compare to the geology in the Sidney area?”.
