Intellectual Property Awareness, building and protecting IP value, university tech transfer and an STTR overview are covered in an upcoming workshop sponsored by the Montana Department of Commerce – Montana Technology Innovation Partner Program.   The workshop is scheduled for September 17^th in Missoula.

All companies have intellectual property assets, are you working yours to the best advantage?  Intellectual property (IP) extends well beyond patents and copyrights, and all companies have IP of one kind or another.  If you don't fully understand your IP or how to leverage its competitive value, this session is for you.  Companies will be guided from a business perspective to identify and protect their IP inventory, and to integrate IP strategies into ongoing management and decision-making processes.  Learn about IP strategy development; gain tips and resources for STTR funding for R&D; become alert to how University tech transfer can enhance these efforts.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear about the Montana University System's win-win approach to technology transfer. Learn specifically, how university connections and relationships are leading to more and more mutually beneficial collaborations between the state's universities and small businesses. 

The session will close with a brief discussion of the Small Business Technology Transfer program, an excellent source of federal funding designed specifically to support collaborative university/business efforts for the purpose of developing and commercializing innovative technology.

Presenters: Marti Elder, long-time champion to small businesses working to develop and commercialize innovative technology, will present the IP material.   John Balsam, a Montana-based consultant specializing in helping companies identify and access public R& D funding opportunities, will present STTR.
